MEET MIA

Mia is a writer of fantasy and supernatural stories, usually with a bent towards the historical. As a former educator who has always been obsessed with stories of adventure and mystery, Mia crafts young adult and new adult fiction that explores complex topics and messy characters through a lens of hope, courage, and magic. A native Texan with roots in southern New Mexico, Mia’s stories often include multicultural and intergenerational themes.

Perhaps surpassing her love of stories though is Mia’s love for creatures big and small. When her husband proposed, Mia was promised a barn full of rescue animals. With two cats and a mop disguised as a dog, she still has some work to do. Between cuddles with furry children, Mia loves hiking, photography, and falling into holes of distraction on Wikipedia.

Mia is currently revising her 85,000-word YA Fantasy, City of Beasts.

City of Beasts

While attempting to rescue her younger brother, seventeen-year-old Isa becomes inadvertently captured alongside him and taken to the reeducation center in the colonial government’s largest city, where colonial officials intend to “civilize” the indigenous children of the continent. However, there she is only further separated from her brother when a wealthy couple with their own agendas for the continent adopts her to be a pawn in their marital games. As Isa falls deeper into the lion’s den of colonial politics and navigates feelings of anxiety, confusion, and guilt, her long-suppressed magical abilities begin to show themselves and, perhaps, become her only means of escape.

This upper YA fantasy is ideal for fans of the political and cultural conflicts in Tomi Adeyemi’s CHILDREN OF BLOOD AND BONE and Laia’s character arc in Sabaa Tahir’s AN EMBER IN THE ASHES.
